Complete Solution
Economic integration of S/390 mainframe and RISC technologies
enables
you to place S/390 processing power wherever you need it at a low
cost.
Integrated client/server application development
environment
The IBM RS/6000 with S/390 server is a low-cost,
single environment used to develop UNIX client/server applications
for both the RS/6000 and S/390 environments.
It enables existing UNIX applications to integrate with existing S/390 applications and data in the same server environment with minimal effort to take advantage of the security, reliability and scalability that S/390 provides.
The IBM RS/6000 with S/390 server provides highly scalable, enterprise-wide solutions by porting current UNIX applications to S/390 with minimal investment. OS/390 provides XPG4 base branding, which allows easy porting of UNIX applications to S/390, and VM/ESA provides support for selected POSIX(TM) standards.
The IBM RS/6000 with S/390 server can also be used as a workbench to test applications for susceptibility to year 2000 problems. Even though the millennium is still a few years away, the year 2000 is starting to show up in application data fields now. This unique server solution provides an excellent standalone environment to inspect application code or test the application itself if the source code is unavailable. Application data can be modified and the system clock can be changed as often as necessary without fear of impact to production environments.
Take advantage of the RS/6000 environment
On the RISC platform, AIX applications provide channel and I/O
emulation, operator controls, tools for managing devices and
diagnostics. In addition, Telnet server for 3270 sessions
support and X-Windows based manual operations are provided.
This enables developers to create new open applications for
AIX and S/390 using familiar tools.
Take advantage of the S/390 environment
This offering
runs within an IBM RS/6000® server that manages
the I/O and user workstations.
The heart of this system is a
S/390
microprocessor that can execute the S/390 instruction set
and run
OS/390,
Migration path for current S/370 users
For organizations that depend on proven S/370(TM)
applications to drive their business,
the RS/6000 with S/390 server offers
a cost-effective way to make the transition to
next-generation S/390 computing.
With the powerful S/390 microprocessor, you can run your key S/370 and S/390 applications. With OS/390 and MVS/ESA operating systems, you can even develop and run your UNIX and S/390 applications.
For a replacement of S/370s, this system can provide:
For network computing
IBM is fully committed to help our customers leverage their investments
in S/390 while allowing full participation in the network
computing environment.
For S/390 customers who need to re-engineer their business, IBM RS/6000 with S/390 server provides an ideal platform to distribute S/390 applications across the enterprise, enabling users with consistent business applications and data. It can provide S/390 remote, unattended operations that translate into greater system availability, lower communication costs, greater configuration flexibility and simpler operation.
For the open/distributed LAN environment,
IBM RS/6000 with S/390 server can function
as a client to a host server or as a server for the clients in the LAN.
For example, it can be a printer server, a file server, or an Internet
server with its inherent networking structure (native TCP/IP).
The hybrid capabilities (S/390 and UNIX) are
unmatched by any of IBM competitors.
